About Mike Weinstock
A Brief History
Teaching
I started teaching in 1978 as a PE teacher at Clough Hall Comprehensive School in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire.
I then moved to Mount Pleasant First & Middle School in Fenton where I taught PE to all ages from Reception
through to 13 years of age.
Coaching
In 1983 still working for Staffordshire Education Authority I became Director of Coaching at the PE Centre Burslem. My job entailed running the gymnastics programme at the centre and coaching children of all ages and abilities.
I worked with children from Pre-school up to International standard performers and children with various disabilities. During this time I delivered gymnastics in-service training sessions for Staffordshire teachers and teacher education courses for a number of midlands universities.
I was also fortunate enough to have been selected on a number of occasions to accompany British teams to a number of international competitions including World & European Championships and Commonwealth Games. I still am actively involved in coaching competitive gymnasts twice a week at a local gymnastics club.
Teacher Training
Since 2002 I have been employed by Sandwell Education Authority as a Specialist Gymnastics Link Teacher. I work as part of the School Sports Co-ordinators Programme out of Wood Green Specialist Sports College. There are 66 primary schools in the partnership and 9 secondary schools. My brief is to work in schools with teachers to help them to deliver a high quality gymnastics programme. To date I have worked in over 50 schools with over 600 teachers and some 16000 children.
I spend ½ a day a week, every other week, in each school for a term. Many teachers in schools have had very little training in Physical Education in general, and Gymnastics in particular. Over the past couple of years I have produced various Gymnastics Resources for teachers.
